Maintaining a vehicle to roadworthy standards should be a priority for everyone operating commercial vehicles.

The importance of checking vehicles DAILY before they leave base can't be underestimated - for the benefit of the driver, vehicle and employer. Mistakes can be costly for everyone so putting effective compliance processes in place is vital.

Key areas that require attention in a daily walk round check are tyres, lights, steering, brakes and mirrors. These can be quickly and easily checked before setting off, giving reassurance that the vehicle is roadworthy and has no obvious defects.

Important points to remember are:

Drivers of commercial vehicles have a legal responsibility to ensure that the vehicle they use on public roads is free from visible defects.

It is important to inspect each vehicle and carry out driver checks before leaving the yard as it then becomes the driver’s responsibility.

Drivers should always carry out a visual inspection to ensure that their vehicles are in a safe and roadworthy condition.

Any defects should be reported immediately and the vehicle should not be driven without the defect being investigated and rectified.
